Preparing For Your New Arrival

It doesn’t need to be overwhelming; here is a handy checklist of the basics you will want to have available to help you and your kitten get settled in.

Cat carry case

The best option would be a carrier that has a top opening and an opening at one end. This will cause less anxiety for your kitten, and it would be even better if there's enough space for your kitten to grow into it.

A cosy bed

Something your kitten will feel safe and secure in. But cats will be cats, and you may find your kitten prefers the box that the bed came in, rather than the bed itself.

Litter tray

As mentioned earlier, cats have their own distinct personalities, and fortunately, they are known for being fastidious creatures. They are typically willing to use a litter tray, and as they grow older, they may eventually transition to going outside to use the bathroom. For kittens and cats with limited access to the outdoors, a litter tray with high-quality clumping litter is essential. Even if your cat has the freedom to roam outside, it is still highly recommended to provide a litter tray.

Food, and dishes for food & water

Proper nutrition is crucial for your kitten's growth and development. To ensure they receive adequate nutrition, it's recommended to have separate bowls for food and water. This will allow your kitten to eat and drink whenever they need to and make it easier to keep track of how much they're consuming.

Flea and worm treatment

Monthly worming is a vital aspect of kitten care and should be continued regularly throughout the cat's life, especially if they live with high-risk groups such as children or the elderly. Similarly, preventing fleas is much better than having to treat an infestation, and monthly doses of gentle flea prevention medication can provide excellent results.

A cat flap

Cats are known for their independence and love for exploration, often letting themselves out to explore the world. Installing a cat flap can be a convenient solution to avoid having to get up every time your cat wants to go outside. There are various cat flap options available, including those that respond only to your cat's microchip, ensuring that other animals and pets are kept out.

Scratching post

Cats enjoy climbing and scratching, which can potentially damage your furniture and curtains. Investing in tall scratching posts or cat trees can provide a fun and safe outlet for your cat's natural behavior, while also helping to protect your belongings. The taller the post or tree, the better, as it provides more opportunity for your cat to climb and play.

Toys

Playing with toys is an essential part of a cat's routine, providing an outlet for their energy and natural instincts. Engaging in playtime with your cat is also an excellent way to bond with them and strengthen your relationship. It's important to provide your cat with a variety of toys to keep them mentally stimulated and physically active.
